Spirit money for our ancestors


At our friend’s annual Tet (Vietnamese New Year) party — bursting with Vietnamese food (including Pho and Gỏi cuốn), drink, and boisterous camaraderie — we burn spirit money to insure our ancestors are well-taken care of and stay well-disposed to those of us still on the earthly plane.

    Interesting to think, even though I am one for ceremony and tradition, that our ancestors need money where they are to remain well taken care of. I prefer to offer them my thanks and gratitude. But maybe I will include the money in my “Leaving/Arriving Ceremony.”
