“Hell’s vengeance boils in my heart” for Mozart’s 259th

In honor of Mozart’s 259th birthday, a little “Der Holle Rache,” the Queen of the Night’s second aria from The Magic Flute, an incredibly difficult aria to sing needing a range of two octaves. In this aria the Queen of the Night urges her daughter Pamina to assassinate the Queen’s rival, Sarastro, or she will curse her daughter and disown her. Pamina’s moral courage wins out in the end but the aria could not make its point more clearly and assertively. It is a riveting, chilling, spell-binding aria and Diana Damrau, as the Queen, does it best. “Hell’s vengeance boils in my heart,” she sings.

This production is from the Salzburg Festival performed in August 2006, conducted by Riccardo Muti.
