The harbinger of life and warmth to come

IMG_8490On this longest night of the year, we potted some paperwhites that a student gave me on Friday and brought up three amaryllis which have been hibernating in pots inside of closed paper bags in the basement. The amaryllis were brought into the light of day, all three of them sprouting albino leaves.

Two of the amaryllis are sitting in a sink of warm water slowly letting the moisture suck up through their very dry dirt. The third amaryllis is in the bathtub sitting in a large bowl of water doing the same. Once fully soaked we will put them out on the kitchen table to bring a bit of color and promise to the bleak winter months ahead.

Though we still have most of winter to (literally) plow through, the promise and fact of more light, amaryllis blooms, and aroma of paperwhites mark this solstice as the harbinger of life and warmth to come.
