Kevin Drum, a blogger for Mother Jones, has called this executive action by Obama absolutely politically brilliant. He details how the Republicans will be tripping over themselves, alienating themselves from the fastest growing sector of our population, latinos, and tying up their own agenda for the next two years. Obama’s executive action has energized the tea partiers and that Boehner’s and McConnell’s threats to Obama if he issued these actions were really pleas for help because they once again are going to have a heck of a time reeling the energies of their right wing in and presenting a stable Republican face to the rest of the country. Drum concludes his post:
So: the whole thing is politically pretty brilliant. It unifies Democrats; wrecks the Republican agenda in Congress; cements the loyalty of Hispanics; and presents the American public with a year of Republican candidates spitting xenophobic fury during primary season. If you’re President Obama, what’s not to like?
I can only hope it’s true. As for me, Obama once again has taken the high road. Politically shrewd or not, this was a brave and courageous first step in resolving the tenacious problem of immigrants “in the shadows.” Bravo, Mr. President.
