Melodica and Ito

Japanese born pianist Suguru Ito plays “Czardas” on a melodica, also known as a pianica, blow-organ, or key-flute. The melodica was first invented by Hohner (of Harmonica fame) in the early 1950s. Though mostly used in music education throughout Asia, it has been used as a serious instrument by Steve Reich, as well as jazz musician Phil Moore Jr., among many others.

The video above was live in concert at the Hotel Japan Shiga in 2009.
