To turn, turn will be our delight

I have a wonderful student– bright, engaged, and creative– who has a unique and extraordinary talent. She is pictured above writing out the Preamble to the Constitution — upside down. Yes, this is, in fact, how she writes and has been using this method since she was small.

When I first saw her write down information in class, I thought she was just being experimental or silly. I was quickly redirected and assured by everyone that it was just her way.

So here is to the unusual and unique, the exceptional and unconventional. Sometimes to understand the right-side up, we have to turn upside down. As the Shakers have reminded us, “To turn, turn will be our delight, till by turning, turning we come ’round right.”

We are each unique. That is one of the things I love the most.

Many, many years ago, I worked as a customer service representative in a bank and I had a customer who wrote upside down. That was the least of what was delightful about her.
