Riprap by Gary Snyder

Lay down these words
Before your mind like rocks.
xxxxxxxplaced solid, by hands
In choice of place, set
Before the body of the mind
xxxxxxxin space and time:
Solidity of bark, leaf, or wall
xxxxxxxriprap of things:
Cobble of milky way,
xxxxxxxstraying planets,
These poems, people,
xxxxxxxlost ponies with
Dragging saddles—
xxxxxxxand rocky sure-foot trails.
The worlds like an endless
xxxxxxxfour-dimensional
Game of Go.
xxxxxxxants and pebbles
In the thin loam, each rock a word
xxxxxxxa creek-washed stone
Granite: ingrained
xxxxxxxwith torment of fire and weight
Crystal and sediment linked hot
xxxxxxxall change, in thoughts,
As well as things.
