Thundersnow

It happened twice. Yes. Thunder. During Chicago’s two foot winter snowfall last night (and 50 mile per hour winds), thunder and lightning was seen and heard two times over the windy city! For the most infinitesimal fraction of a second, I thought it was summer.

Apparently thundersnow (yep, that’s its name) is a very rare meteorological phenomena. It works much the same as thunder and lightning in our warmer seasons, a result of a strong, upward motion of warm, moist air. What makes this rare in the winter is that warmer ground temperatures rarely occur during snowstorms.

Even rarer than thundersnow is my school closing. It prides itself for this stoic choice. However, even my school was forced to close its doors today. And I just received an email that we will be closed again tomorrow. Will wonders never cease?

You know, there are only so many rare phenomena that one can take at a time.

(All photos except for the last two were taken by JB.)
