52% of Americans approve of God’s job performance

On July 21, Public Policy Polling out of North Carolina released its most recent polling results. Though Congress’ ratings are still low,

Q3 Do you approve or disapprove of the job Congressional Democrats are doing?

Approve …………………………………………………. 33%
Disapprove……………………………………………… 54%
Not sure…………………………………………………. 13%

clearly not a surprise, what was most unexpected was the result that God got a 52% approval rating for its job performance. Only 9% disapproved. “Its” (the possessive adjective used by the pollsters) handling of creation got the highest rating of all: 71 –5 approval rating. Q7 If God exists, do you approve or disapprove of its performance?

Approve …………………………………………………. 52%
Disapprove……………………………………………… 9%
Not sure…………………………………………………. 40%

Q8 If God exists, do you approve or disapprove of its handling of natural disasters?

Approve …………………………………………………. 50%
Disapprove……………………………………………… 13%
Not sure…………………………………………………. 37%

Q9 If God exists, do you approve or disapprove of its handling of animals?

Approve …………………………………………………. 56%
Disapprove……………………………………………… 11%
Not sure…………………………………………………. 33%

Q10 If God exists, do you approve or disapprove of its handling of creating the universe?

Approve …………………………………………………. 71%
Disapprove……………………………………………… 5%
Not sure…………………………………………………. 24%

Aside from a good chuckle, what was the point of these God questions? Lots of assumptions here. Is this a Judeo-Christian God? Are the “Not sures” agnostics? atheists?

Which story of creation is being approved? There are two contradictory ones in the first two chapters of the Bible, let alone ones from other religious traditions. Its handling of animals? huh? And approving the job “it” is doing? What’s that supposed to mean? Even if one is a believer, isn’t there a whole realm of free will? Don’t most of us create our own “luck?” Aren’t we all the creators of our lives and responsible for the kinds of impact we have on others? Isn’t it all of our jobs to be responsible for the world we are living in? Now I am not a believer in an anthropomorphic God, but if one does believe in a God, shouldn’t the question be– Would God approve of your job performance?

Well, at least God beat out Rupert Murdoch’s and John Boehner’s approval ratings, though I’m not quite sure what significance that holds, except for the fact that I bet those two are doing a lot of praying right now.

Weird, but fascinating. I guess we can blame that 52% for the Tea Party! :)

  2. I am not a believer, but I do like the idea of asking ourselves about our own job performance re: disasters (our impact plays a big role, no doubt). We could ask ourselves this question about many things, and probably it is easier to pin it on some god rather than look within. After the chuckling, you have to wonder why we are so willing to point fingers at god. Great questions about the assumptions made here.
